Eligibility: Must be one of the following licensed clinician in the U.S.:
Primary Care Physician (MD or DO), Dentist (D.D.S. or D.M.D.), Pharmacist, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Registered Clinical Dental Hygienist, Clinical or Counseling Psychologist (Ph.D. or equivalent), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (master’s or doctorate in social work), Registered Nurse (R.N.), or Physical Therapist.
Service Requirement: Participating physicians must sign a 2 or 3-year support-for-service contract (MOA) with the State of Alaska. These physicians will serve in every region of Alaska.
Who can Apply: Must be a US Citizen.
Repayment/Scholarship terms:
SHARP-I: Loan repayment for primary care clinicians working in federal HRSA health profession shortage areas, largely with underserved populations. The contracts are two-year service contracts, with the opportunity to renew the contract on an annual basis thereafter.
SHARP-II: This program has been authorized through 2018 for 90 clinicians at any one time. It provides enhanced flexibility, as participating clinicians can work in a greater variety of healthcare sites, in varied types of practice, are not confined to federal health professional shortage area locations only. The contract are three-years.
It provides loan repayment and direct incentive, both full-time and part-time.
Tier-1: physicians, dentists, pharmacists
Tier 2: physician assistants, nurse practitioners, RN-Level nurses, physical therapists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, and dental hygienists
Clinicians cannot have concurrent service obligations. Also, each participating site must contribute a partial employer match to its clinician’s support-for-service payment.
Amount of Repayment per Year of Service:
Tier I Professional: $35,000
Tier II Professional: $20,000
For very hard-to-fill positions:
Tier I Professional: $47,000
Tier II Professionals: $27,000
Part-time positions receive 50% of the above amounts.
Additional Information: As of 2013, 74 clinicians have been admitted to the SHARP-I program, serving as primary care physicians, behavioral health specialists and dentists.
