Dr. Gerard Roberts
Dr. Gerard Roberts went to Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. At Northeastern, he was a Biology and Psychology major. Northeastern University was the first co-operative college through a five year program where students both worked and went to school. Dr. Roberts worked in a hospital. When asked when he became interested in working in the medical field, Dr. Roberts explained, “If you believe my mom, she would say age three!” Dr. Roberts continued by explaining that he started thinking about becoming a doctor in high school. He knew he wanted to do something with people and children. Therefore, Dr. Roberts became a pediatrician.
Dr. Roberts attended the Medical College of Ohio, Toledo. Through his service at homeless shelters and hospitals while in medical school, Dr. Roberts became aware of medical underserved populations. Dr. Roberts did his residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). This residency program exposed him to all different ethnicities and economic backgrounds. Because UIC was a large state hospital, Dr. Roberts encountered a wide variety of cases. He felt that he was always working with the poor because of his patient population. He believed this helped with the overall experience of being a doctor.
Dr. Roberts began working in central Indiana as a pediatrician. He then switched positions and began working at North Shore Health Centers. North Shore Health Centers is a group of federally qualified health centers. Dr. Roberts learned about the NHSC loan repayment programs through this health center. They encouraged him to apply, and Dr. Roberts has been very happy with the program since.
He is now in his sixth year of the program. After the first two years of the NHSC loan repayment program, doctors must reapply every following year. Dr. Roberts exclaimed that it is up to the physician to find a suitable place that qualifies under the loan repayment program. Dr. Roberts currently works at HealthLinc in Michigan City. He said, “I have always liked the idea of working with the underserved. By working in these clinics, I can help the most people.” His advice to those interested in loan repayment programs is to investigate this option early because he did not discover it until later. He explained that these programs provide a “wide range of experience” and are a “very viable option for someone who has student loans.”
